COLLECTORS to collect, preserve and showcase major works (a range representing one quarter of the permanent collection). The project, which exploits the entire space of the MAMAC is over 3500 m² on three levels, takes the side of a single large exhibition based on its permanent fund. An essential principle animates this project: the museum exhibition is never static, it is transformed at a regular pace to offer tracks of successive readings of contemporary art. The aim is to enhance the permanent collection while renewing public interest in modern and contemporary art. This exhibition wishes to provoke in the visitor, discovery, emotion and why not revelation and aesthetic shock; the latter will be able to compare, detail, build and deconstruct some of the major themes of art from the 1960s to the present day.
The distinction between permanent and temporary exposure is for a time abolished; here, these two notions of clashing intertwine and reinforce each other. In the image of an acquisition policy conducted over the last thirty years, the exhibition emphasizes the France / United States axis, the abstractions of the French and American 1960s and 1970s, the creation of the Riviera and the great international personalities crossed. according to meetings or exhibitions made for the museum.
COLLECTORS is a journey in the art of assembly through the use of the raw object or waste, often resulting from the consumerist society, metamorphosing ultimately into a collector's item. A selection of works from American Pop Art form a first set responding to the likes of Minimalism, Conceptual Art and a third French way with Supports-Surfaces. This set puts in perspective the New Realism group then the School of Nice through a refocused approach on the art of attitudes and the object. Niki de Saint Phalle and Yves Klein keep an exceptional place. The 1980s follow suit and are approached with the American Figuration and the latest contemporary trajectories, sometimes giving way to individualities.
