Yves Klein and Japan

Maison de la culture du Japon à Paris, Paris, France

Before becoming interested in painting, Yves Klein was passionate about judo, a discipline that was still confidential in post-war France. He meditated, learned about Zen, ate vegetarian food and in August 1952 embarked for Japan, where he obtained his 4th dan black belt and made encounters that would have a profound effect on him. In the company of Denys Riout, professor emeritus of modern and contemporary art history at the University of Paris 1 - Paris Sorbonne, co-author of Yves Klein Japon (Éditions Dilecta, 2020), Frédéric Prot, lecturer at the University of Bordeaux Montaigne, author of Yves Klein, Embrasure (5 Continents Editions, 2012) and Grégoire Robinne, director and founder of Dilecta, we propose to explore the link between the artist's fascination for Japan and the formation of his art through a selection of archival photos illustrating this little-known part of the life of the painter of monochromes.
