Ashes and Gold. A World's Journey

Marta Herford, Herford, Germany

This exhibition takes the visitor on a journey inspired by two worlds of two completely different materials: ash and gold. She ventures a unique glimpse of a tense relationship between the two, wondering what are the values that ash and gold embody in society and what myths surround the oldest known materials of human civilization. It also explores for what purpose they have been used in the visual arts beyond purely decorative.
With nearly 100 works by famous artists - including Joseph Beuys, James Lee Byars, Marcel Broodthaers, Rebecca Horn, Yves Klein, Jannis Kounellis, Gerhard Richter, Richard Wright and many others - this exhibition illustrates these issues in a very lively way .
