Face-to-Face with Images

Draiflessen Collection, Mettingen, Germany

Viewing art always begins with the individual experience of a work, with personally examining it. The focus of the exhibition is on perception as well as the relationship that can develop between a work of art and those who view it. The exhibits selected date back to various centuries and include a wide range of artistic techniques. They are meant to draw attention to what the fleeting, individually or collectively experienced moment of viewing art can bring about.
Correspondingly, the exhibition does not address any media- or genre-specific aspects. It is concerned above all with the potential that is inherent in the works on display and is activated on the part of the artist by means of the mode of depiction.

The artworks presented in the exhibition engender very different moods and should not be regarded as merely a depiction of something. They in no way exist isolated from our everyday lifeworld, but are instead part of it. One of the central questions in the exhibition is: How do viewers experience these works?
