On Fire

Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice, Italy

On Fire is the title of the first exhibition devoted entirely to the use of fire as a means of artistic creation among the post-war avant-garde movements. Curated by Bruno Corà and organized by the Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Tornabuoni Art, the exhibition brings together a careful selection of the most emblematic works made with fire or that include the presence of the flame itself.
The exhibition is structured in six sections that allow us to discover, for the first time, Yves Klein, Alberto Burri, Arman, Jannis Kounellis, Pier Paolo Calzolari and Claudio Parmiggiani side by side and in the grip of fire.
Although the works presented are united by the use of fire, the exhibition is divided into sections on each artist, highlighting the different ways in which they used it. Fire can be used as an instrument for burning materials (Klein, Burri, Arman); as a living presence with its own sensory effects, sometimes spectacular - through light, heat or sound - (Klein, Kounellis, Calzolari); finally, as a pictorial trace through the residual smoke of a combustion (Calzolari, Parmiggiani).
On Fire documents one of the most radical and at the same time unexplored revolutions of artistic language in contemporary art, through 26 works gathered thanks to the collaboration of the artists' foundations and loans from important international collections, including several masterpieces never presented or rarely shown to the public.
