The Sponge Reliefs for the Gelsenkirchen project were first imagined in white and then blue.
When he sent his fragments to Gelsenkirchen, Yves Klein wrote on 11 January 1958: "I ask you to please accept blue for the whole thing. (...) The continuity of blue is the great style and it has been my ideal for years already".
